Unwise king, humble dog

Portrait of Portuguese king D. Sebastião (1554-1578), with a dog. If this young man looks vain, well, he was. He thought to be the saviour of Christianity and a great warrior, and died at a stupid battle in Africa - Al Qasr al Kabir [wiki]. I like the look of the dog, somehow humble and wiser, by contrast.

Interesting. Dogs and cats in art I know there are a lot. They sometimes tell alot about the life those days for dogs and cats.
I have a postcard of Goya with a tiny little dog. Maybe I'll scan it and show it here soon
